WINIFRED GWYLLT*
Sixty-three years old, School Nurse
represented Ravenclaw, bearing a 9.25 inches, slightly springy,
ash, with the hair of a unicorn wand
Personality
winifred, or "wini" as her friend's call her, has never been one to pass up the opportunity to smile or make a joke. she has been known to tell people she got her brains from her father(also a ravenclaw), and her smile from her mother(a hufflepuff). a combination that helped her become a healer and handle the stresses of such a career. her ability to remain lighthearted even in trying situations serves her and her patients well. even if a patient has splinched a limb off she will normally be humming a tune as she reattaches it. with friends she is much the same way...though perhaps a bit more troublesome.
History
Wini was born in a small hidden wizarding village in Wales, not far from the muggle town of Brecon. Her father comes from an old Welsh wizarding family while her mother is a muggle-born witch who grew up in the town of Caernarfon. Thanks to her mother being muggle-born she always had an interest in the way muggles go about life as compared to wizards and enjoyed spending time at her maternal grandparents. Her mother is also the reason she is a lifelong Holyhead Harpies fan. She has a younger sister and a late older brother.
She attended Hogwarts where the Sorting Hat made the hard decision of placing her in Ravenclaw. It was in her 3rd year that she became interested in healing after seeing her friend's ankle being mended after a fall off a broom. The idea of being able to fix the body fascinated her and she began to learn small healing spells almost immediately. As an animal lover she also took an interest in healing animals and enjoyed helping her Care of Magical Creatures professor in her free time.
After Hogwarts she began training to become a healer. While most of her training took place at St.Mungos she did get the opportunity to train abroad for a year. During this time she trained in a North American wizarding hospital where she was introduced to the idea of using house elves as more than housekeepers. The head healer she trained under found that house elves were rather good healers in their own rights and were much better than a patient's family at making sure the person was properly taken care of in their own home. The healer was able to teach many house elves(with their master's permission) basic healing skills that allowed their master's fewer visits from a healer. This is the reason that should you need the hospital wing, you may just see one or two house elves in light green tea towels with the hogwarts crest stamped on them.
While in North America she also met a dashing young wizard named Christopher and they were soon head over heels for one another. As often happens in such stories, they got married and he returned with her to London where she became a practicing healer at St.Mungos while he went on to work for the Ministry in foreign relations. They had a few happy years together until the first wizarding war changed everything. Christopher was one of the many killed by Death Eaters because of his involvement in the Ministry and his refusal to join them. After his death Wini did her best to keep her head down and to concentrate on healing. Eventually she returned to healing in North America and remained there until receiving a letter informing her of Poppy Pomfrey's decision to retire as school nurse and offering her the position after Poppy had recommended her. Wini gladly accepted, relishing the idea of returning to her old school. She has been at Hogwarts ever since and has no plans of leaving anytime soon.
